IGN SXSW ScreenBurn Arcade will also feature IGN Pro League All-Star Matches for StarCraft II and League of Legends
The IGN Pro League (IPL), the professional video games league hosted by IGN Entertainment, has partnered with Capcom to present the IPL Street Fighter X Tekken Exhibition Tournament live from the IGN SXSW ScreenBurn Arcade in Austin, Texas, on Friday, March 9, 3-7pm CST. This will be the first time professional gaming will be broadcast live from SXSW.
The exclusive exhibition tournament event will feature eight players gathered from across the United States to compete head-to-head playing Capcom’s newest fighting game, Street Fighter X Tekken, which launched on console systems in the U.S. on March 6, 2012.
“Gaming has become a huge part of the SXSW experience, and this is the first time professional gaming will be presented to the SXSW audience. It’s a big moment for eSports,” said David Ting, GM of eSports and VP of Research & Development for IGN Entertainment.
The IPL Street Fighter X Tekken Exhibition Tournament will tie-in Capcom’s “Cross Assault” reality show – the first ever fighting-game-centered internet reality show – which began airing February 22, and features 10 players split between Team Street Fighter and Team Tekken competing for a $25,000 grand prize. IGN will bring out the top two finishing “Cross Assault” players to compete in its SXSW tournament, and six additional players will join the “Cross Assault” winners in a double-elimination tournament broadcast live from SXSW ScreenBurn.
In addition to the Street Fighter X Tekken tournament, on Saturday, March 10 the IGN SXSW ScreenBurn Arcade will feature All-Star matches with the world’s top League of Legends teams and StarCraft II players – including TTeSports’ White-Ra (winner of IPL 2) and Millenium’s Stephano (winner of IPL 3) – as voted by more than 100,000 fans. The events are free and open to the public and will be broadcast live at www.ign.com/ipl.
With the IGN Pro League franchise, IGN’s goal is to help legitimize video gaming as a profession that can produce the next generation of celebrities. Since its launch in April 2011, the IGN Pro League has attracted more than four million unique viewers to its online and live tournaments.
