Director Nick Willing has already brought Alice and Tin Man to Syfy and now he's done it again with NEVERLAND, a new take on Peter Pan and his legendary battle with Hook. This time we get the story from the beginning with a few twists along the way.
In this new miniseries we get the story from the beginning, watching young Peter (Charlie Rowe) and his friends "the lost boys" being watched over by Jimmy Hook (Rhys Ifans), an "old friend" of Peter's now deceased father. A magic globe is found and accidentally transforms them to a new world, Neverland. Jimmy finds himself teaming up with a band of pirates led by their beautiful captain Friel (Elizabeth Bonny) . As Jimmy skillfully sets his plan in motion to take over and become the leader, Peter, who has been hurt, is saved by a group of fairies, including Tinker Bell (voiced by Keira Knightley) who takes the boy to their magical spring and ultimately gives him his powers, the same powers they have. Peter also meets an Indian tribe who also help him along the way.
Jimmy catches up with Peter and at first misleads him and makes him think he's on his side. Peter takes him and shows him how he was healed, some secret places he promised never to show or speak of. Jimmy then turns on Peter which leads to the ultimate showdown between Peter and the lost boys and Jimmy Hook and the pirates. We watch Peter and Hook become the characters we've loved, watched and read about over the years.
Neverland includes a great story with some special F/X that I'd like to have seen done better but the action sequences make up for it. Its not enough to hurt this retelling though as it's a enjoyable watch for the entire family. The acting is all great with one special highlight most fans will love,Bob Hoskins reprises his character Smee from the movie Hook from the early nineties. Rhys Ifans does such a great job and pulls off the ultimate villain! We get to see the giant, 8-legged alligator that comes into play a few times during the miniseries as well. Lots of sword fights, gun fires and even arrows flying through the air.
Bottom line is, if you're a fan of all of the Syfy miniseries to date then be sure to pick up Neverland when it releases on DVD and Blu-ray on March 13th. Add it to your collection! 4/5
