Blu-ray Review: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 serves as a prequel to its predecessors.  Ok, this time we go back to the 80's where we see sisters Katie (Chloe Csengery) and Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown) again but this time very young and with their mother, Julie (Lauren Bittner), and her boyfriend, Dennis (Chris Smith)

Dennis is the one who has the video camera in this chapter and this is where we get the footage from. The camera once again plays an important part as far asthe "found footage" stuff goes and takes us even further into the demonic presence that this family has dealt with over the years. The two sisters pull off an outstanding performance to be so young! Also, we meet the ghost "Toby" and this one isn't a nice ghost either!

PA3 is directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman who brought us the dark thriller Catfish. The two directors don't miss a thing as they take over the reigns of the franchise! We get that 80's feel in which the movie is set. There are a few shots that might be too clear but I think it had to be done that way for visual F/X purposes. The directors use the camera like it's the main character in the movie, done exceptionally well! The camera sets up and rotates left to right during several scenes in the movie that set up really fun visually dark moments for the viewers. The movie also gets really creepy this time, much darker than the others, to me anyway. There are more jumpy scenes in the movie compared to the other two, a few being really good and catching you off guard! That's the plan aint it! The ending is really weird but I wouldn't expect anything different from these two directors. What they've done this time is introduced the fans of this franchise to new characters and mysteries leaving us with new questions. It's pretty freaking twisted at the end!

I've talked to several people who hasn't even watched the first two movies but jumped right in with this one and really enjoyed it. It's not a movie that you have to see the others before watching because it really stands on its own even though it's closely tied to the previous two.

Bottom line is I really enjoyed this third outing and honestly think it's the best of the series! The one thing I didn't like is it takes a while to set up a scene or two but that's it, nothing too bad at all  .Go get Paranormal Activity 3 now and check it out!  I recommend the Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack that I got. 3.5/5
