Blu-ray Review: ICE QUAKE

ICE QUAKE on Blu-ray comes to us from Syfy's lineup of disaster movies courtesy of Anchor Bay. It takes us to Alaska in the dead of winter, Christmas to be exact. What happens is just what the title says, an ice quake erupts seeping out a deadly gas from beneath the surface.

The ice quake itself looks like it chases any human in sight or their luck is just that bad.  Researchers find out the hard way that this deadly gas comes with the quake and if you get in it or cross its deadly path, your dead. The gas freezes you from inside out. The quake also fires up some avalanches which everyone is also trying to avoid.

We have a family who gets caught in the middle of all of this. The dad (Brendan Fehr) happens to be a geologist and who ultimately figures out a way to stop the quakes and  the deadly gas from destroying the earth. Local military are also on the scene but really aren't much help through the entire movie.

Of course along the way we get several unsuspecting victims who get caught up in the deadly quake's path. Once again, it looks like this quake is chasing humans!  The special F/X are great but not enough to satisfy me in this movie. There are a few good points about Ice Quake  though. One is, it is shot out where the winter, snow covered scenery is great to look at. Another highlight is actor Victor Garber makes an appearance in the movie. All of the actors do a great job in this mediocre movie and you can tell that they are freezing in some shots. It's just not enough to save this natural disaster from being a disaster.

Bottom line is watching Ice Quake on Blu-ray is just an ok movie with a dull plot. It's another Syfy natural disaster movie that kind of recycles other movies that we've already watched. Ice Quake releases on January 3rd, 2012.
