Blu-ray Review: APOLLO 18

I got to check out the "found footage" sci-fi/horror flick APOLLO 18 on Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack and even though it got some bad reviews when it hit theaters I actually enjoyed it.

Apollo 18 is another "found footage" sci-fi/ horror hybrid that tells us the story of what happened to the doomed mission and its crew. What we see in the beginning is that this is over 80 hours of footage the DOD has been hiding since 1972.  The what if's are what make this movie what it is! We watch the realistic film as it follows the astronauts as they land and explore the moons surface only to find something has happened to some Cosmonauts who had landed there earlier, something bad!  The camera plays an important part as we watch shadows begin to move without revealing too much at all. This is gives the viewer an opportunity to use their imagination on guessing what exactly is happening here while giving an awesome "what if" this could actually happen. Our doomed astronauts eventually find out more then they want to know about the mission and why they were sent there in the first place.

Director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego does a great job here with the only flaw being that the story drags some but pays off well when we eventually get some answers. I loved the camera work with the actors as sometimes these "found footage" films get a little too shaky but that didn't happen with Apollo 18, it just looks like "real footage" that has been uncovered and that to me is a job well done!  The actors do a great job selling the suspense as it builds and the story unfolds. The F/X are used very well and play an important part in the film but definitely aren't over used at all. I actually wish we had more!

Bottom line is if you haven't watched Apollo 18 yet then give it a try on this Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack that includes some cool extras that help make it a more enjoyable experience! Pick it up when it releases on December 27th. 3.5/5
