DVD Review: THE LAST CIRCUS

There's lots of people who are afraid of clowns and one thing for sure if they watch THE LAST CIRCUS they are sure to be and will never look at a clown the same way again.

Watching The Last Circus on DVD was a wild watch to say the least. It's set during the Spanish Civil War and the Franco regime and follows a good man's tragic journey into darkness and insanity, he's driven that way too!  As watch watch second generation clown Javier, the sad clown, who wants nothing more in the world but to follow in his father's footsteps, get picked at daily by Sergio, the happy clown.

The story is pretty much a love triangle between the two clowns and Natalia, one of the acrobats.  Javier falls for her but Sergio has beat him to the punch. Sergio has Natalia because of her fear of him and he's even is abusive to her at times. He pretty much bullies everyone around him. As Javier finally snaps we watch him do a few things to himself that allows him to go into character, without the help of makeup. Natalia is torn between the tow clowns because each has a trait she likes, one abusive and one romantic.  Ultimately The Last Circus turns tragic, with twists, blood and death.

Director Alex De La Iglesia has a great movie here and Antonio de la Torre portrays a bad guy like no other and Carlos Areces allows you to feel for his character as he slowly falls into his abyss. He really makes you hate clowns even more but this isn't really a horror movie! I've really never seen a movie like this but it has hints and the influences from genre favorites are definitely present. The setting and scenery helps so much with this movie as it tells its story and the actors all pull of their characters with great performances.

Bottom line is I highly recommend The Last Circus. This DVD was a fun and insane watch and kept me entertained through the entire movie. For those of you who have a hard time sitting through foreign films you have the choice of setting the dub to your language or watch it in subtitles. You'll never look at clowns the same way again!
