DVD Review: MOBY DICK (2011)

We all now the story of Ahab and MOBY DICK and with this latest adaptation on DVD it has finally been delivered to a present day telling that is far superior to its predecessors. This original  Encore mini-series  has been transferred to DVD and delivers a crisp and clear watch for the fans of this story, like you've never seen before!

We watch William Hurt in the role of Ahab and as the movie goes he becomes just a little more twisted, to the point he disregards the safety of his crew for his crazed, revengeful obsession of the white wale, nicknamed Moby Dick. Watching Hurt slowly go insane over his obsession with the whale that almost killed him years earlier just drew me in. You watch his crew members, even the few he's close to slowly become strangers and distant and pretty much invisible to Ahab.

Other standouts in Moby Dick include Ethan Hawke, Donald Sutherland ,Gillian Anderson, Eddie Marsan, Charlie Cox and Billy Boyd who all put on an unforgettable performance in this tale.  Another strong standout in this movie is the special effects! We haven't seen this story made with the modern day effects like this and it really takes the latest incarnation to the top and then some! The ship and its crew on the high seas, the ocean and ultimately the white wale, it's all pretty awesome! We all know how the story goes and how it ends and with this we get to see Ahab and the white wale go one step farther, thanks to the special effects in the movie.

Bottom line is if you love the timeless Herman Melville story and you've seen these movies remade over the years then you will absolutely love this latest offering! This story of Moby Dick is an instant modern day classic! 5/5
