Dexter Season 5 picks up after the death of Rita courtesy of Trinity. Everything around Dexter (Michael C. Hall)seems to be unraveling including his close relationship with Rita’s kids.
Enter Julia Stile’s character (Lumen Ann Pierce) who is a survivor of a small ring of friends who kill for sport and amusement and have done so for a very long time. At the beginning Dexter can tell Lumen is left in shock and has been tortured but he doesn’t know to what extent until he begins quietly investigating what has happened. As the two grow closer Dexter also begins working on patching up things with Rita’s kids all while detective Quinn starts to get suspicious of Dexter, even more than usual.
Dexter does get a little careless this season, he breaks some of his rules and even becomes a teacher of sorts as he helps Lumen seek out her revenge on the people who hurt her and killed many others. Dexter begins to have feelings for Lumen who he insists is a tenant and ultimately when the final task is done she decides to movie on leaving Dexter where he was at the beginning of the season, picking up the pieces but not without Dexter growing more as a person and not the monster he describes himself as.
The cast in this series is second to none, each person has something going on that doesn’t drift too far from the main storyline and ultimately all intersect. Jennifer Carpenter, Desmond Harrington, C.S. Lee, Lauren Vélez, David Zayas, James Remar, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Peter Weller and April Hernández Castillo round out this awesome cast that continues to entertain with each episode in this fifth season DVD set.
One extra note for the fans of blood and gore, there’s not as much this season.
